A Whole Lot Of Things Going On!

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

Happy Independence Day! Hope you are able to enjoy the day, even though the weather isn’t that great.

What have we been up to?

Well, a couple of weeks ago our friends Mark and Jenn got married. Awesome wedding, awesome food, just awesome. :-) The wedding was in Holland the reception was in Saugatuck at a beautiful golf course where they served all local foods and beverages. Wine from the Leelanau Peninsuala, local vegetables and fruits and other deliciousness.

The next weekend, our friends Jason and Sarah got married. We were able to be the master and mistress of ceremonies. This was also an awesome wedding. The reception was at the Grand Rapids Museum and the exhibits and carousel were ours for the evening. Amazing!

There’s Sarah getting ready to walk down the aisle

Also that same weekend, Jim played in the Ludington Macker. How is that possible? Well, we made it work. We drove up early on Saturday and he played and won one game. Then we came back and mastered and mistressed the wedding. Then back up for a full day in Ludington on Sunday. Needless to say, we were exhausted. But, Jim and his team did get 2nd place!

Then last weekend was the Reeds Lake Run. I did the 10K again, but hadn’t trained very well this year. I have only been running a few times a week since the Riverbank. I was able to finish, but did it a little slower than I wanted.

Then later that day it was Julie’s open house! It was a beautiful and hot day. Lots of food, friends and family. I think I OD’d on those blasted butter mints. MMMM so tasty.

We’ve got some more basketball tournaments and runs coming up, so it should continue to be fun summer. We are hoping to fit in a vacation soon, too!

Life has been good recently, nothing too exciting. So, I haven’t been posting. But the natives are getting restless (Mandie!! :-) ), so here I am with an update.

Yesterday, I played in the alumni basketball game at my high school. We only had five girls show up, so we ended up playing with the guys. Our school changed names my senior year when we moved to our new building. We went from Calvary Baptist Academy (kinda makes you cringe) to Calvary Christian Schools. So, our two teams at the basketball game consisted of the two schools. Technically, I should have been on the CCS team, but CBA only had one girl. I crossed over to the other side and played with my former Bible class teacher, people from the class of 91 and twins that are about 6′ 7″. And we didn’t even win!! It went into overtime, but in the end our missed free throws and lay-ups caught up with us. It was a fun time though. And even though I run a few times a week it most certainly does not make you in shape for playing in a two hour basketball game. Oy…

This next thing will most likely make you all green with envy. Next weekend, Jim and I will be joining the Brandsen’s in a trip of a lifetime. We are going to Punxsutawney, PA to see Phil the groundhog come out of his hole and forecast the seasonal future. Now now… jealousy is a sin! I will be sure to take pictures so you can feel like you were there.

And that dang groundhog better tell me that spring is coming next week because this cold is driving me crazy!

Good-bye June

Monday, June 30th, 2008

What a great, but exhausting weekend. The Reeds Lake Run was beautiful, just a tad sticky. I did 1:02 again, so at least I am consistent! I crossed the line by myself, so the announcer actually yelled out “Here comes Wendy Braam (except he said Bram… oh well). Great job, Wendy.” Ha! I laughed to myself a little bit. It made me sound like I was awesome. “Oh, look out for her!” Ha.

After that I drove up to Ludington to catch Jim’s second game, which they won! We head back up again in the morning. Sunday was freezing, but they won their first one and lost the second two. They ended up with third place. Jim played with some really nice guys, so that always makes it more enjoyable. Katie’s husband played on the team also!

It was a super busy weekend, so I am struggling to stay awake today. And of course, we started out the day with a staff meeting from 9-11. It was actually really good, just hard to concentrate. Phyllis Tickle talked with us. She has a lot of good things to say and is 74 – an awesome combo. Many people referred to this meeting as “Tickle Time.” Whatever it was, it was good.

I am very excited for this four day work week. I love holidays!!

Weekend of Sports

Friday, June 27th, 2008

The Reeds Lake Run is tomorrow! Since Jim is playing in the Macker Tournament in Ludington and Michele is growing a human being :-) , I will be flying solo. This will be something new, but really, all I have to do is drive, park and run, so it can’t be that hard. :-)

So yes, Jim is playing in Ludington, so if I can, I will go up for his second game. Then he will be playing on Sunday too. We will drive up both days (which sucks gas) but we don’t have to pay for lodging then… not sure which is more expensive. I am going to go with this: it saves money to drive up (not very confident in that though).

On a side note, I have 25 stinkin mosquito bites on my body. I counted. I may have even missed a few. What is up with the killer mosquitos this year? I can’t even go outside to weed my garden. They are just hovering over the grass. I douse myself in bug spray – it doesn’t matter. I think I will start showering in deet.

We survived

The Grand Haven 5K… well… is wasn’t easy. I will not complain or make excuses, but I will just state the facts:
1. It was 75 degrees and approximately 75 percent humidity. Sticky and not optimal for running.
2. I have never seen so many hills in a 5K (see above). I will have to train differently for this one next year.
3. I didn’t drink enough water before hand so I got the good old side cramp after the first half mile.
4. They didn’t scan your chip at the start, so your time started when everyone else’s started. So, even if you actually crossed the start line a minute after everyone else, your official time was already a minute in. So, I don’t actually know what my time is. Frustrating.
Again, that’s just the facts.
The rest of the Saturday was OK. Jim didn’t win his basketball tournament, but it was fun. We made it to the race at Berlin. The racer CARSTAR sponsors didn’t do that great, but at least he didn’t crash…
So, I guess we didn’t really succeed at anything yesterday… ha! Sorry, that was a really Debby Downer thing to say. For some reason that feels OK and we had a good, loooong day.

Crazy times ahead…

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Jim and I like to stay busy and do fun things, but sometimes we get carried away. Here is what Saturday holds for us: Wake up by at least 6 AM and leave by 6:45 for Grand Haven. I am running in the Coast Guard Festival 5K at 8. Be done by at least 8:29AM (need a good time!). Leave Grand Haven and get back home in time for Jim to drive to Hudsonville and play in his all day basketball tournament. I will probably be catching a quick nap and head over to watch him play later on in the day. After his tournament is done, we have to head over to the Berlin Raceway for “A Night At the Races.” It’s a thing his work puts on every year. We are supposed to be there by 6, but I highly doubt that will happen. That will at least go until 10. Good thing we have a day of rest on Sunday! :-)

Hope you have a great weekend!
